MUSIC EDUCATION SPECIALIZATION : The Diploma Program in Music Education is designed to serve the needs of two different groups of teachers:

1. Teachers who have not completed the Music Minor Program in Elementary Education generally take a number of the courses from the Music Minor program in order to gain the knowledge and skills required to work as a specilist music teacher at the elementary level. Recommended courses include:
MUSIC 207 Instruments for Children
MUSIC 230 Choral Techniques and Interpretation
EDEL 328 Music Literacy: The Child
EDEL 425 The Child's Voice: Choral Techniques for the Children's Choir
EDEL 427 Music Creativity: Teaching and Learning
EDEL 428 Music in the Elementary School
EDEL 411 Drama in the Classroom
One other course chosen from senior level curriculum and instruction studies in the Department of Elementary Education.

2. Teachers who have completed the Music Minor Program in Elementary Education generally use the Diploma Program to increase their expertise in Elementary Music Education methodologies through the Department's summer offerings in the Kodaly Method, the Orff Approach and Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Workshops are offered for credit each year during July and August. In addition to Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze workshops, special topics courses are sometimes offered. Students may also include EDEL 411 (Drama in the Classroom) and up to 3 courses offered outside the Department of Elementary Education (such as courses in dance or music).
